The Mare Pool

Sutton Coldfield

This red-brick building was a new addition to the small shopping precinct built in c1970. It is situated in the centre of Mere Green, an area once known as ‘Mare Pool’ or ‘Mare Fields’. The name refers to pasture land by a ‘mere’ or pool.

A new development behind the pub was attracting more people to the area with restaurants, a Costa Coffee and a range of retail outlets. The main entrance to the pub was on the other side of the building. DV Architects’ team of venue design specialists were challenged to consider both the exterior and interior space and to provide a full design and build service to attract new customers from the retail development.

The venue architects created a second entrance, opposite the new development and an external seating area, wrapped around the pub. Inside, a complete refurbishment transformed the pub, removing the circular booths to create a more open plan dining area, facilitating more covers, and introducing new carpet and new lighting. The kitchen was upgraded to keep up with the new covers. At the same time, the product lines were upgraded and local ales and craft beer introduced. Tall, fixed seating was installed to support craft beer sales.
