This popular pub in Bournemouth had a ground floor entrance with a bar, leading to a first floor that linked to a very busy garden area at the back. The garden would usually get full before the pub did. The initial challenge to the venue architects was to increase the capacity of the garden to meet demand, using the existing available exterior space. The first phase of work was so successful that DV Architects was then asked to work on an internal and external refurbishment for the ground floor.
DV Architects doubled the size of the first floor garden area by using existing storage, delivery and refuse areas that were not being used effectively. The garden area was refurbished with timber booths, gazebos and raised areas to create an ‘inside outside’ space that could be used throughout the year. In the second phase of work, the team transformed the ground floor entrance bar with a lighting upgrade, furniture, new carpet, redecoration and defined areas for drinking and dining. A new pavement garden with 20 chairs was added at the front entrance.
