Acorn Inn

Lichfield

From at least the mid 19th century to the 1970s, the neighbouring building was The Acorn public house, now the name of this Wetherspoon pub. Although only a small city, Lichfield has a remarkable reputation as the birthplace or hometown of famous men and women, particularly in the literary field.

When the design venue team carried out initial analysis of the site, it was clear that the pub was situated on a prominent high street in an affluent area but looked tired and dark inside and was being missed by potential customers. There was an excess of furniture inside the pub that had not been well thought out and its booth seating needed reupholstering. On entering the pub, customers could see dirty dishes, waiting to be hoisted to the kitchen on the first floor.

DV Architects designed an open gantry food area, where customers will see clean crockery on clean tiles, under heat lamps, as their first impression. The team worked with the existing glazed atrium roof light in the middle of the pub and introduced additional lighting to lighten and brighten the venue, improving its appeal. The refurbishment led to record sales and DV Architects has been commissioned to design a new goods delivery system to the rear entrance of the building in order to cope with the new demand.
